Blog: Rollerback –
Ergonomic back support for bicycles

Shark Tank of Patents

On September 30, 2024, Andreas Tscheinig and Josef Bogenschütz presented their invention Rollerback - an ergonomic back support for bicycles - on the TV show "Die Höhle der Löwen" (counterpart to shark tank in the USA). With this product, they want to make cycling more comfortable and healthier. In our "Die Höhle der Patente" series, we shed light on the original idea, existing solutions, the special features of Rollerback and the underlying patent EP3972891B1.

The idea behind Rollerback

The founders recognized that many cyclists suffer from back pain and tension, especially on longer rides. To counteract this problem, they developed Rollerback, a back support that is mounted directly under the bicycle saddle. This is designed to promote a more ergonomic sitting posture and improve power transmission when pedaling.

What already exists in this area?

There are already various solutions on the market to improve riding comfort, such as suspension seat posts, ergonomically shaped saddles and special handlebar attachments. These approaches aim to reduce vibrations and optimize the riding position. However, they usually focus on individual aspects of riding comfort and do not offer direct support for the lower back.

What makes Rollerback special?

Rollerback is distinguished by its direct support of the lower back, which leads to a more upright sitting position and relieves pressure on the spine. The simple mounting under the saddle allows individual adaptation to different body sizes and bike types. In addition, the back support can be used for both leisure riding and sporting use.

The patent (EP3972891B1)

The Rollerback patent protects an innovative back support 1 that is characterized by a special design. The crucial aspect that was emphasized in the examination procedure is the hinged connection of the bracket 7 with the holder 2 (see FIG. 1 of the Rollerback patent).

This design allows flexible adaptation of the back support 1, which improves both ergonomics and driving stability. This "characterizing" part of the main claim was the key to the patent grant.

Prior art D1 (WO2019086059A1)

International patent application D1 also describes devices for supporting the back when cycling. However, this prior art focuses on rigid/stiff or less adaptable constructions (see Fig. 9 of D1).

[Fig. 9 of D1]

The hinged connection of the bracket with the holder in the Rollerback patent, on the other hand, offers a technical solution that is both novel and inventive, as it significantly improves functionality and customizability.

In other words, the Rollerback patent convinces through the hinged connection of bracket and holder, which offers flexibility and comfort and is new and inventive compared to rigid solutions.

Outlook

Rollerback offers a promising solution to a common problem for cyclists: back pain and loss of comfort on longer rides. The combination of ergonomic support, simple assembly and individual adjustability makes the product attractive for both leisure and sporting use. With its sophisticated design and the articulated connection in the bracket system, Rollerback clearly stands out from existing solutions.

The granted patent EP3972891B1 not only secures the uniqueness of the invention, but also strengthens the product's market position by blocking the way for potential imitators. This patent-protected innovation could also pave the way for further adaptations and model variants that cater to the special requirements of different target groups such as e-bike riders or long-distance commuters.

Given the increasing interest in ergonomic and health-promoting products in the mobility sector, Rollerback has the potential to establish itself as a permanent fixture in the bicycle market in the long term. With a focus on sustainable production and potential partnerships in the bicycle segment, Rollerback could further expand its market presence and revolutionize the comfort of cycling in the long term.
