Vole Light –
The underground garden light

13.05.2025

Shark Tank of Patents

In the seventh episode of the thirteenth season of "Die Höhle der Löwen" (DHDL - counterpart of shark tank in the USA) on May 15, 2023, Joachim Wendel presented the innovative Vole Light garden light. The retractable light impressed viewers with its high light intensity, robustness and the option of app controllers.

Vole Light is a garden light that can be completely sunk into the ground, providing a tidy appearance and high light output. The light eliminates any tripping hazards or obstacles in the garden. Thanks to its individual controller and setting options via app, the Vole Light offers versatile use. The garden light can also be controlled individually via app, push-button or programming and can also be used by robotic lawnmowers.

Taking part in the TV show "Die Höhle der Löwen" offers start-ups a unique platform to present their products to a wide audience and attract potential investors. This appearance can act as a significant catalyst for the company's success. By being broadcast in prime time, start-ups reach millions of viewers. Even without a deal, many start-ups benefit from this increased visibility, which often results in increased sales figures. Numerous companies have achieved lasting success following their appearance on DHDL.

The idea behind Vole Light

Joachim Wendel and his sons realized that conventional garden lights often represent obstacles and can be damaged during activities in the garden. To solve this problem, they developed the "Rise & Shine" lawn lights, which are fully retractable into the ground and can be extended and retracted as required. This ensures obstacle-free use of the garden and protects the lights from damage.

Existing garden lighting solutions

The market for garden lights is diverse and offers a wide range of lighting solutions that meet different requirements and aesthetic desires. Here is a more detailed look at the most common types of lights:

  1. Path lights: Path lights are the classic choice for illuminating walkways, driveways and garden paths. They are primarily used for orientation and safety, especially in the dark. Thanks to their usually low to medium height, they provide sufficient light without dazzling. Many models have a modern, minimalist design that blends unobtrusively into the garden. Some versions are even equipped with motion detectors to save energy and only provide light when needed.
  1. Solar lights: Solar lights are particularly environmentally friendly as they draw their energy directly from sunlight via integrated solar cells. They are wireless, which means they can be placed flexibly in the garden without the need for complex installation. Modern solar lights are often equipped with LED technology, which ensures a long service life and high light output. In addition to classic free-standing lights, there are also solar spotlights or floating solar lights that effectively illuminate water surfaces.
  1. Wall lights: Wall lights are mounted on the exterior walls of houses, garages or sheds. They are not only used to illuminate entrance areas or patios, but also to provide security by illuminating dark areas in the garden. Many models have a simple, modern design that adapts well to the appearance of buildings. Some versions are equipped with twilight sensors so that they switch on automatically at dusk.
  1. Ground spotlights: Ground spotlights are a popular choice for setting accents in the garden. They are installed flush or slightly raised in the ground and illuminate specific objects such as trees, bushes or garden sculptures. With swivel-mounted spotlights, light beams can be individually aligned to create a dramatic effect. Some models offer color-changing options that can be controlled by remote control or app to adapt the lighting mood.
  1. Fairy lights: Fairy lights are particularly popular for decorative purposes. They create a cozy and atmospheric ambience, for example at garden parties or on warm summer nights. Whether in trees, on fences or under pergolas - they lend the garden a playful or romantic flair. They are available in numerous variants, from classic white lights to colored or even solar-powered versions.

Further developments and trends

In addition to these classic types, there is an increasing demand for smart garden lighting solutions. Smart lights can be controlled via an app, offer timer functions and can even be networked with voice assistants such as Alexa or Google Home. Manufacturers are also increasingly focusing on sustainable materials and recyclable designs.

This variety shows that there are suitable garden lights for almost every purpose and taste – from functional path lighting to stylish accentuation of garden areas.

What makes Vole Light special?

Vole Light combines the advantages of these luminaire types and offers additional functions:

  • Invisible when switched off: the light disappears completely into the floor, leaving a tidy appearance.
  • Obstacle-free: As it is sunk into the ground, it does not represent a tripping hazard and can be easily driven over by robotic mowers or lawn mowers.
  • Individual controller: The light can be flexibly controlled and adapted to different needs via app, push-button or programming.

The patent application (EP3891336A1)

An exemplary aspect (see Fig. 1 of the Vole Light patent application) is that the Vole Light, referred to as a concealable lawn light 1, has a light holder 2 which has a drive 4 at one end portion 21 and a heating coil 6 at the other end portion 22 which completely runs around this other end portion 22.

Prior art D2 (US5425595A)

The prior art shows similar fully retractable pop-up landscape lights, which, however, have a different type of de-icing system (see "heating unit 74" in Fig. 4 of D2).

In addition, the Vole Light patent application has other features that differ from the conventional techniques of the prior art, for example, claim 10 of the Vole Light patent application, according to which the light holder 2 comprises a venting and drainage channel 23, which connects an inner end portion of the light holder 2 with an outer end portion thereof.

This was also seen by the Examining Division as the essential difference to the prior art - which led to the grant of the patent (see EP3891336B1).

Conclusion

Vole Light is a prime example of innovative product development "Made in Germany". The retractable garden light combines functionality and aesthetics in an impressive way. It solves a common problem in garden lighting: the balance between practical use and visual integration. While conventional lights often represent obstacles or unsightly elements in the garden, Vole Light disappears elegantly into the ground when not in use.

Thanks to its robust design, the light is not only weatherproof, but also suitable for demanding garden situations. The control options - whether via app, button or programming - allow flexible adaptation to individual needs. In particular, the option of having the light run over by robotic lawnmowers sets it apart from other solutions on the market in terms of functionality.

Vole Light clearly demonstrates how a clever combination of technical sophistication, design and user orientation can set new standards. For garden lovers, this not only means more comfort, but also a harmonious overall appearance without compromising on functionality.
